At BUY GOOD GOOD we donate 15% of every single purchase to GiveDirectly.
GiveDirectly has a number of different programs that we support, and each represents a cause we at BUY GOOD GOOD deeply care about. Read below to learn more about GiveDirectly and the programs our GiveDirectly donations support.
Extreme Poverty - Give cash directly to those effected by extreme poverty, and therefore a lack of access to business funding, medical treatment, education, safe housing, and sustainable food sources.
Disaster Relief - Give cash directly to those effected by unforeseen disasters.
Refugees - Give cash directly to those displaced from their home countries by violent conflict, natural disasters, climate change, humanitarian crisis, civil rights abuses, or lack of opportunity.
COVID-19 Relief Funds - Give cash directly to those in the US and Africa who are in financial peril due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Universal Basic Income - Universal Basic Income could be monumentally important in the fight to eradicate poverty, but more research and evidence is needed. GiveDirectly is conducting a 12 year study with MIT and Princeton to create the research needed to see if Universal Basic Income can fight extreme poverty effectively. At the very least, we are giving funds directly to those in extreme need, and at the most, we are helping to fund research that will support the eradication of extreme poverty.
We give cash directly to people living in poverty.
GiveDirectly is the first — and largest — nonprofit that lets donors like you send money directly to the world’s poorest. We believe people living in poverty deserve the dignity to choose for themselves how best to improve their lives — cash enables that choice.
Donors have given over 160 million dollars to people in need.
Since 2009, we’ve delivered over $160 million in cash directly into the hands of over 170,000 families living in poverty.
And no, people don’t just blow it on booze. And no, people don’t just blow it on booze.
It’s ok. Many people think that at first.
In fact, research finds people use cash in impactful and creative ways.In fact, research finds people use cash in impactful and creative ways.
We read the research. We read more research. Then we did our own research. And it turns out, people use cash on medicine; cows and goats and chickens; school fees; water; solar lights; tin roofs; irrigation; motorcycles to jumpstart taxi services; businesses to generate income; and more.
If you think about it, doesn’t giving directly make sense? If you think about it, doesn’t giving directly make sense?
Cash allows individuals to invest in what they need, instead of relying on aid organizations and donors thousands of miles away to choose for them. Isn’t this what you would prefer?
When disasters strike, individuals have their own personal emergencies. Whether it’s losing their home, being unable to get to work and pay the bills, or needing to purchase medicine, each person has their own unique challenges. These needs are difficult to predict. Yet donors still send canned goods and used clothes, making the decision of what the recipient needs most.
Wouldn’t you rather choose for yourself?
Cash enables that choice.
Imagine instead of getting a pile of used clothes you were given $1,500 no strings attached. What would you spend it on? Fixing your car, buying a generator, or replacing your fridge? Cash recognizes that everyone has unique emergencies and it is unrealistic to expect aid organizations to predict the wide array of complex needs that arise. Instead, cash allows recipients to prioritize and solve their own challenges.
Unsurprisingly, a majority of recipients prefer cash to traditional disaster relief.
And it turns out it’s pretty impactful.
Cash transfers are among the most well-researched and proven approaches to reducing poverty and changing lives. With over 165 studies, cash has been shown to have a wide range of positive impacts. In our disaster relief pilot in Puerto Rico, we saw the strongest evidence of impact on debt avoidance, stress reduction, and improvement in living conditions.
In 2018, GiveDirectly successfully piloted large, unconditional cash transfers to long-term refugees. Simply put, cash worked – recipients reported considerable and wide-ranging positive impacts. In addition, recipients preferred cash to in-kind aid.
Today, we’re building on the success of our pilot to test the impact of giving lump sum cash grants to refugees at scale.
Through this experiment, we hope to inform some of the biggest challenges facing humanitarian aid today, help us explore how we can go beyond helping refugees to survive, and instead empower them to prosper.
As governments impose lockdowns to limit the spread of COVID-19, many families are suddenly unable to continue earning a living. Few have the financial resources to cope with this crisis. For example, in Mathare, an urban slum in Nairobi, 95% say they are eating less due to COVID-19.
This is the time for direct giving — it’s fast, it’s efficient, and it allows each individual to pursue their own specific needs. And most importantly, it provides the dignity of choice and respect.
GiveDirectly is leading the world’s largest and longest term experiment to date studying the effects of a Universal Basic Income. As part of this $30M project, we have already distributed millions of dollars to 20,000 individuals living across 197 villages, and an additional 100 villages have been surveyed as a control group. Some individuals will receive payments for 12 years, and the full study will last at least that long, but initial results are expected in 2020.
